Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located at a distance of 180 km from Zagreb, 234 km from Sarajevo, 320 km from Belgrade and 560 km from Vienna. The city is connected to all the larger cities in Europe by a rail and road network. The main bus and railway stations are located approximately 2 kilometres away from the city centre. Should you decide to travel by plane, we recommend the Banja Luka International Airport, which is located 23 km north of the city, as well as the Zagreb International Airport. The best way to get around in Banja Luka quickly is by taxi, which is cheap and can take you to any destination of your choosing. In order to get to the city centre from the main bus station, you can use the bus lines No. 6, 8, 10 and 13.
How to travel to Banja Luka
By car
Banja Luka is located on the expressway M 16, also numbered as E 661 in the international E-road network, which is the most important transit road in this region. This route connects the Central and Eastern Europe with the Adriatic coast. Banja Luka is located at an intersection of regional E-W and SE-SW routes that connect it to Prijedor, Doboj, Derventa, Teslić, Ključ and many other places. In addition, the entire region is covered by a network of asphalt roads of local significance.
Zagreb is located at a distance of 180 km from Banja Luka. When travelling to Banja Luka from Zagreb, merge onto the highway E 70, heading east towards Belgrade. Exit the highway in the town of Okučani, 106 km from Zagreb, turn left onto route E 661 after passing the toll booths and drive 11 km south to the border crossing with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Gradiška. From Gradiška, continue driving 50 km south on the same route (E 661) until you reach Banja Luka.
Belgrade is located at a distance of 350 km from Banja Luka. When travelling to Banja Luka from Belgrade, merge onto the highway E 70, heading west towards Zagreb. Exit the highway in the town of Okučani, 300 km from Belgrade, turn right onto route E 661 and then drive 11 km south until you reach the border crossing with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Gradiška. From Gradiška, continue driving 50 km south on the same route (E 661) until you reach Banja Luka.
Sarajevo is located at a distance of approximately 250 km from Banja Luka. When travelling to Banja Luka from Sarajevo, drive north-west towards the town of Kakanj, merge onto the highway E 73 and then, after 60 km, choose one of the two routes towards Banja Luka.
The first route, which is longer and better, continues north along the route E 73 through Zenica, Maglaj and Doboj. 17 km after passing Doboj, turn left and continue driving towards Derventa, Prnjavor and Klašnice. In Klašnice, after passing the bridge, turn left and merge onto the highway M 16 (E 661) and continue driving 16 km south towards Banja Luka.
To take the second route when driving from Sarajevo, which is shorter and much more interesting, turn right in the town of Lašva, merge onto the expressway E 661 towards Vitez, Travnik and Jajce and then continue driving towards Banja Luka.
